This old-school recipe is quick to put together and absolutely delicious, with the syrup soaking into the crispy baked dumplings.
Makes 14-16 small dumplings.
Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 20 mins
Ingredients
For the Dumplings:
1 cup of self raising flour
1 egg
1 tbsp butter
a splash of milk
For the Syrup:
1 cup of water
1 tbsp butter
1 cup of sugar
1 tbsp golden syrup
Method
Start with the dumplings. Rub the butter into the flour. Beat the egg and then add it to the flour. If the mixture does not stick together, add a splash of milk until you have a stiff dough. Roll the mixture into small balls. Put the balls into a greased tin or casserole dish.
Pre-heat the oven to 180°C.
Now for the syrup. Melt all of the ingredients together in a saucepan, without bringing it to boiling point.
Pour the syrup over the dumplings and bake for 20 minutes. Serve with a dollop of cream or ice-cream.
